Over 500 people were detained for violating prohibitory orders in different parts of Uttar Pradesh even as the 17th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition passed off peacefully on Sunday.
According to state Additional Director General of Police A K Jain, no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the state. In Ayodhya, a “yajna” was organised at the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s office at Karsevakpuram where president of the Ram Janam Bhoomi Trust Mahant Nritya Goapl Das expressed confidence that a grand Ram Temple would soon come up at the disputed site.

In Faizabad, over 50 activists of the Hindu Mahasabha were taken into custody when they tried to defy the prohibitory orders and march towards the disputed site, police sources said here.
In Ayodhya, over 100 Shiv Sainiks took a pledge at the Saryu river to construct a Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Elsewhere in the state, workers of the Samajwadi Party tried to take out processions in various parts to register their protest over the demolition of the mosque but were thwarted by the security personnel, sources said.
The Muslim outfits observed the day as a “black day” while the VHP observed “shaurya diwas” on the occasion.
